There is something reassuring about standing for something, and knowing what we stand for.
For men and women who are true to themselves and to the virtues and standards they have
personally adopted, it is not difficult to be true to others.

Zachary

Zachary Bryce made his big entrance on June 14, 2011. I got my hopes up on June 2, when I went to the hospital with pretty decent contractions coming one minute or so apart. However, since I didn't progress enough and hadn't reached my due date yet, I had to take the "walk of shame" and was sent home. The nurses promised me that if I just went and walked the mall, I'd be back later that night, and even my doctor, who was heading out of town that weekend for a trip that would last past my due date (June 12), thought it was the "real deal." But a pedicure, Orange Julius, and long walk around the University Mall later, everything had pretty much stopped. Thankfully (or not?), Zach hung in there for almost two weeks so his mommy could have her own doctor deliver him.

The night before Zach was born, contractions started up around dinner time and became more and more regular by the time I went to bed. Feeling pretty gun shy about going to the hospital only to be sent home again, I was determined to "tough it out" and labor at home as much as possible. By 2 a.m. the contractions were waking me up. Genius that I am, I decided to take a bath "to relax" (which I've learned since can actually speed up labor), then I climbed back in bed. Within 15 minutes, my water broke. Grant and I both jumped out of bed, got ready to go, and got to the hospital around 4:45 a.m. Good thing we live only a short drive from the hospital, because Zach was born at 5:28! The admissions staff didn't take me too seriously, and took their own sweet time checking me in, but when the nurses checked me and started frantically getting the room ready, I started panicking. I asked one of them if I was even going to be able to have anything for the pain, and her nervous "Um ...." was not the answer I wanted to hear! Thankfully, they put me first on the list once the anesthesiologist got there, and bless his merciful soul, he gave me a spinal block. All I know is I have a whole new respect for women who deliver their babies naturally. I have never experienced pain like that. It was really scary. When the nurses commented to me afterward, "Wow, I bet you hope all your babies would come that quickly!" I said, "No way. That was scary." My doctor got there literally just in time to set up his table and deliver my baby. WAY different from my experience with Eliot, when I labored almost 11 hours, had to be given Pitocin to get things going, and slept through the worst of it thanks to an epidural I received early on. So that's Zach's story. Hopefully with our next child we'll strike a happy medium between basically being induced and practically having a baby in the car!

Our friend Heather took took some newborn photos of Zachary in our home. He was just a week and a half old, and I love them! As much as I don't love the fact that I'm in so many of them, showing off my postpartum blubber, I love that we captured little Zach so teeny tiny and sweet. Heather shot over 300 pictures, but these are some of our favorites:

Welcome, Zachary! We love you!

Zach's current nicknames include:
  • Zachers
  • Baby Z
  • Mr. Z
  • Zebedee (from his "Ampy" McEuen -- comes from his initials, ZBD)
  • Eliot prefers to call him by his full name, Zachary Bryce
  • Gator (from Grant's mom, who has assigned an animal name to all her grandbabies)
  • Zachy
Some of our favorite things about "Mr. Z":
  • His strawberry blond, fuzzy hair
  • His big, almost goofy smile
  • His persistence (he can hold medicine in his mouth for minutes at a time without swallowing)
  • His grunting ... actually, we're glad that's dying off
  • He's not a big crier and doesn't cry too loud ... yet. I guess we should really be grateful for the grunting.
  • His "chill" personality
  • We've got another TV junkie on our hands! He loves to stare at it.
  • His tolerance for the amount of love his brother smothers on him.
  • His resilience to the amount of love his brother smothers on him.
  • His pinchable thighs.
  • We think he's pretty darn cute, but we know we're biased!

Announcing ...

... Baby Z!! We are so thrilled to have him in our family! It's strange to think that the doctors were so worried about how "small" he was (is a 7 lb. baby small? I thought it was just right), because he is chubbing up nicely these days. We love his pinchable thighs, his "froggy" smile, his chill personality, and the cute baby sounds he's finally making after a month or so of grunting around the clock. Poor guy has had a rough start struggling with reflux, which has made him super uncomfortable and unable to sleep well (hence why Mommy hasn't posted anything, since she hasn't been sleeping well, either!).

It is a whole new world with two -- one day we hope to make some sense of the chaos we live in at the moment. But we sure do love this new little guy and will try to share more pictures soon! I am especially excited to share many more of the photos my friend Heather Clark took, like the ones shown on this baby announcement she designed for us. She did a photo shoot for us in our home, and we are beyond thrilled with how they turned out (well, except that I feel a little sheepish that I ended up in so many of them -- not feeling so fabulous 10 days postpartum, but worth capturing some intimate family moments with our little newborn!).

More later ...

Happy Father's Day!

What a wonderful day to celebrate daddies!

And There Went My Due Date ...

June 12th has come and gone, and still no sign of Baby Z ...

As anxious as we are to meet our little guy, here's the good news: My doctor has been out of town for over a week visiting his new twin grand babies, so I've actually been hoping to hang on until he got back. Just saw him this morning, and I feel so much more relieved knowing my own doctor will deliver Mr. Zachary. I've decided this child is either exceedingly thoughtful or just plain stubborn. Given the personalities of his parents (who can each be thoughtful and stubborn), it's probably a little bit of both!

Me on my due date.

40 weeks and going strong!

We're ready when you are, little one! And if you won't come on your own, we'll get you here one way or another. That doctor you so thoughtfully waited for doesn't want Mama waiting too much longer, so ready or not, June 15th is your date (I'm scheduled to be induced bright and early Wednesday morning)! We think it's a pretty perfect date, as you'll be your Nanny's birthday present. (But we also think the 13th and 14th are lovely days, too ... no pressure.)

Who Does This?!

This week, Grant and I got to enjoy one of the best date nights we've ever had. One of our joint birthday presents to each other this year was tickets to the off-Broadway production Les Miserables. We listened to an audio version of the book in preparation, which, even though it was an abridged version, was an accomplishment for me.

At the Capitol Theater in Salt Lake just before the play. The weather was beautiful -- truly a perfect night! I'm feeling very pregnant in this picture ... as I also felt squished in my seat with minimal leg room -- Grant and I both struggled a bit!

The whole night was a DEFINITE splurge for us, especially considering that besides getting to see Les Mis, 1) We got to ride in our friend's parents' limo (our bishop and his wife, parents of our good friends Mark and Tasha, own a limo ... and why not?!) ...
Our Bishop, aka "Chauffeur" for the evening ...

... and 2
) We got to eat at The Roof restaurant, a mouth-watering, fancy schmancy buffet at the top of The Joseph Smith Memorial Building at Temple Square.
At The Roof. Can you see the faint sillhouette of the temple spires behind us? Too bad we didn't get our picture before they lowered the shades.

Three things I must mention about The Roof:
1. Eating there was nostalgic for two reasons -- 1) My parents took me there when it was the restaurant at the Hotel Utah for my 8th Birthday. I got to wear my white baptism dress, got a rose from my dad, and had my first taste of shrimp cocktail. 2) Grant took me to The Roof for our Prom (aww ...), and this was our first trip back together. Now knowing how much it costs, I did feel a twinge of guilt knowing he paid that much for me in high school! All the more reason to love him, right?

2. Here's how to make a trip to The Roof affordable: Join the Frequent Dining club on the Temple Square Hospitality website, and make sure you get signed up for the birthday promotion -- a two-for-one postcard! Makes the $40/plate much easier to swallow!

3. The DESSERT BAR was heavenly! Apparently, the JSMB has on-site pastry chefs that whip up the most delectable spread I've ever seen. My choices, though there were at least 20: the Chocolate Decadence cake, fresh fruit tart, and fresh fruit. The Oreo Mousse cake I sampled from Grant's plate was pretty insane, too. Wishing I also would have tried the Creme Brulee. The shockingly high stats on some recent blood work held me back , though (if three desserts is "holding back") ... bummer.

At the theater. We were supposed to be looking "miserable." Grant either just missed the memo, or he is incapable of looking anything but happy. At 8 1/2 months pregnant, however, apparently I have no trouble looking miserable.

The limo ride home. Okay, as if riding in a limo isn't indulgent enough, Tasha and Mark had stocked the refreshment bar with fancy chocolates, cookies, mints, and sparkling cider. Thanks for being such amazing hosts, guys! Obviously you made Grant happy!

Thumbs up to a spectacular evening! Hooray for one final BIG splurge before baby takes over our world!

Happy Birthday to the Man I Love

Today is Grant's birthday, and I couldn't be more excited to celebrate the life of the man I love and adore. I honestly just love him to pieces, and I admire him for all he has accomplished in his life. He makes me a better person and is one of the happiest, kindest people I know.

Here are some of the many reasons I love Grant:

He is the most understanding and thoughtful husband.
Grant does so much for me and always finds so many ways to make me happy. No one can make me laugh like he does. I have loved him for so many years and will love him forever.

He is very intelligent, yet doesn't take himself too seriously!

He's kind of a nerd, but it works, 'cause I am, too!

He's a bit of a rule Nazi,
especially when it comes to board games ... which I'll admit can be buggy, BUT, it's what makes him good at his profession, right?

He is a pretty darn good cook ... and not afraid to wear an apron.

Grant has a contagious smile and a childlike enthusiasm for life!

He sure gives our boys lots to live up to ...
and not just 'cause he's tall! Grant is the best, happiest, most patient and playful dad.

He is so gentle and tender ...
as a father, husband -- he really is such a compassionate person.

Grant is amazing.
He's my best friend, the love of my life, a remarkable dad to my boys, a loyal son and brother, a successful and honest attorney, a humble and diligent Church member, and my favorite person in the world.

Happy Birthday, Grant!
I love you!

Glimpses of Spring

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like this has been an especially wacky spring ... even for Utah. One day we have 70 degree temps and trips to the park, and the next we wake up with two inches of snow on the ground ... most recently on April 30th! Maybe Oregon made a wimp of me, but that's just wrong!!

Despite the crazy weather, we have gotten some glimpses of Spring this past month. Just having tulips and daffodils spring up in my yard has brought warmth to my heart, even if the weather has brought anything but warmth! I've decided I truly am a sunshine girl -- I'm just so much happier when the sun is shining, and even more so if it's warm!!

I have been waiting for this beauty to blossom since we moved in ... it's so wonderful to see this beautiful tree out my living room window!

My blue-eyed boy checking on our spring flowers. Every day, he has to give me an update on their progress!
This picture makes me feel like a bad mom ... Eliot has been sporting the "orphan look" more frequently than I'd like to admit. Normally I pride myself on having him look respectable, but like many priorities in my life right now, that one has slipped ... I'm just too tired to comb his hair!

This week, we took advantage of the one day with nice weather, and trekked to Temple Square to meet up with friends. My friend Brittany and I worked together at Church Magazines, and ended up expecting our baby boys -- my Eliot and her Jackson -- at the same time. Brit and her family just moved back to Utah after being back East the past few years, and we are so excited to get to see more of them! Eliot and Jackson have become quick friends!
While we waited for our friends, Eliot was delighted to play in the fountains and run from one open area to another ...

... while I tried to catch a few pretty shots of the breathtaking flowers on Temple Square. They smelled as amazing as they looked! Being there and soaking in the beauty of Temple Square in the Spring made me miss the days of lunch with friends and daily walks amid the gorgeous gardens! It's hard to believe that used to be my reality!

This is me and Brittany (with babies Eliot and Jackson in our tummies!) at our joint baby shower at Church Magazines. We were too busy chasing kids to get a recent picture together, but here are those little boys together ... very reverently climbing the statues on Temple Square! How fun to see them together at the place where their mommies met and became close friends!

The highlight of the day for the boys ... riding the light rail train back and forth through downtown Salt Lake!
Eliot and Jax on Trax!

Not Sure Why ...

... but this commercial gave me a major case of the giggles last night.

Probably one of the funniest ads I've seen in a long time,
even if my general tendency to avoid Wal-Mart makes me want to resist it.

Something about this makes me scared to have two boys. Okay, very scared.

Preggo Profile

Per your requests, some photos of me and my baby belly!
In all my 30-week glory. At least I'm looking officially pregnant these days instead of just fat.

Don't let the slimming black fool you too much. I just started my last trimester, and I've already gained about as much as I did overall with Eliot ... oops. It's a little frustrating because I've exercised a whole lot more this time around, but, I'll be honest, my huge sweet tooth with this pregnancy might have something to do with the extra pounds! If this kid's a sugar addict, he'll have his mama to blame!

Handsome As Can Be

If I needed proof that my little boy is not my baby anymore, here it is. Eliot is really growing up. He's not my baby, my "toddles," or anything close to it anymore. He is so big, so smart, so tall, and so, so handsome. I love this picture of him.

Oh, How I Love ...

... that my child loves to read. Reading is one of my great passions (though you might not guess it, by how often it gets pushed to the bottom of my list of priorities). On several occasions lately, I have been pleasantly surprised to find Eliot, in those "Oh no, it's too quiet" moments, looking at books. It's fun to hear him repeat stories almost verbatim or to make up his own stories.

I hope Eliot always loves reading. Love of literature is one of the things I would most like to instill in my children. These are moments that make me happy ...

Photography by Eliot ...

Recently, Eliot has decided he loves taking pictures, and often requests to take our picture whenever we get the camera out (which, I'll be honest, isn't that often these days ...). Here are a couple of Eliot's best shots:

A recent portrait of mommy. This pregnant mama appreciates how flattering this picture is -- he avoided the mid section and somehow managed to make my face look skinny. He even caught me on a good hair day. Thank you, Eliot! You can take my picture any time!

Snapshot of Daddy. Excellent job capturing the essence of Dad's height, Eliot. Maybe we'll have to add a childproof camera to Eliot's birthday wish list ... he's quite the budding photographer!
